postheadericon Dont be worried about the technical terms for diamonds

When it comes to choosing diamond engagement rings, most of us will be aware of the term carat – even if we are not quite sure what it means! If this sounds familiar, don’t worry because you’re not alone, and after reading this you will hopefully have a clearer idea of what to look for when you are searching for that special ring.

The thing to bear in mind is that diamonds are graded in a way which takes into account four factors: the cut, colour, clarity and carat. It’s rare to find a diamond which doesn’t contain traces of non-crystallised carbon as this is the material from which they originate. These are known as inclusions and while they are almost invisible to the naked eye, the greater the inclusion the lower the clarity. This is because they have an effect on the dispersion of  light and therefore affects the brilliance of the stone.

When it comes to colour, the closer a diamond is too being devoid of any colour, the more valuable it is. It’s rare to find a completely colourless stone, but if you find one you can guarantee that it will be worth a fortune!

Moving on to the carat, and this is how the diamond’s weight is gauged, not the size which is often thought to be the case. If you would like more information about the stone which you will choose for diamond engagement rings or wedding rings, talk to the experts at Marlows and they will be happy to advise you.
